The Ultimate Guide to Fall Foliage in the Pocono Mountains

1. Big Pocono State Park

Big Pocono, mere minutes away from The Swiftwater, gives visitors a panoramic view of the Poconos, with sights from three states. Perfect for fall foliage viewing! From the top of the mountain, you’ll get to see portions of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York!

This state park consists of over 1,300 acres, with 8.5 miles of trails of varying difficulties, making it the perfect location for hikers of all levels! In fact, Big Pocono even has a 1.4-mile-long paved trail that provides ADA-Accessibility, while still providing incredible autumn views.

2. Hickory Run State Park

Hickory Run State Park, nestled in the western part of the Pocono Mountains, spans almost 16,000 acres of land. This state park is well worth the 36-minute drive from The Swiftwater to view the stunning fall foliage. In fact, there are over 40 miles of hiking trails within the park.

Hickory Run State Park is home to Boulder Field, which is currently one of the 604 National Natural Landmarks. The Boulder Field Trail is a 3.5-mile-long trail that leads you directly to this landmark. Along this trail, you will even have the opportunity to see different wildlife such as owls, bears, and ruffed grouse.

3. Lake Wallenpaupack

Fall on Lake Wallenpaupack is a beautiful site to behold. The man-made lake offers 52 miles of shoreline dotted with vibrant fall color. Take a walk along the water on the Lake Wallenpaupack Trail or drive the shoreline up route 507 to take in the majesty of the autumnal splendor. Shuman’s point is a 3 mile hike the allows for optimal fall foliage viewing and shoreline views of the lake. Enjoy the views on the lake with the Wallenpaupack Scenic Boat Tours, which offers fall foliage tours on the water through Columbus Day weekend. Located 40-minutes from The Swiftwater, the drive to the lake will be lined with gorgeous colors as well!

4. Bushkill Falls

Bushkill Falls eight stunning waterfalls are a beauty to behold in any season but in the fall, they come alive with gorgeous reds, oranges and yellows. Bushkill Falls offers a variety of hikes for every skill level and is open until late November weather permitting. A little over a 30-minute drive this spot is a fun day trip.

Bring a picnic lunch, check out the gift shop, and take the opportunity to learn more at one of their wildlife workshops. Bushkill Falls is a great spot to revel in the beauty of the season and our area’s natural waterfalls!

5. Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area & Mount Minsi

The Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, 70,000-acre park, is a great spot to take in the vast beauty of fall foliage in the Poconos.

Mount Minsi is a local favorite for the breathtaking views year-round but especially during the fall months. Located on the Pennsylvania side of Kittatinny Mountain, split by the Delaware Water Gap, this 30-minute drive is worth it!

When you arrive at Mount Minsi, you will be met with two trail options. One will take you to the top via the fire road, while the other takes you through the trees. The main trail has 3 separate overlooks. The first gives you a peek at Mount Tammany, which is another part of the Kittatinny Mountain, but on the New Jersey side. The second overlook will give you a full view of the beautiful Mount Tammany. Finally, the third overlook will show you parts of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and the Delaware River. This is a must-see spot for fall foliage viewing!

6. Promised Land State Park

Promised Land State Park is a 30-minute drive from The Swiftwater, making it the perfect afternoon trip. The drive to the park is also lined with stunning fall colors along Route 390. Looking to change up your drive? Rent a slingshot from Pocono Slingshot rentals for a memorable drive through the trees.

Once at the park, you can choose between 50 miles of hiking and walking trails, each with unique opportunities for sightseeing. Before starting your hike, make sure to grab a trails map at the park office!

Little Falls Trail is a 1.02-mile-long hike that takes you alongside a creek with some beautiful waterfalls. The Bruce Lake Trail is 2.5-miles-long and extends for an additional 7.5 miles if you choose. The first part of this trail takes you to the natural glacial lake, while the second part takes you to Boundary Trail at the eastern portion of Promised Land Lake.

7. Jim Thorpe

Jim Thorpe is a 40-minute drive from The Swiftwater but offers stunning views of the Lehigh Gorge. Observe the scenery with a train ride or rent a bike from Pocono Bike to explore the area. Mark your calendars for the Jim Thorpe Fall Festival, happening multiple weekends in October and offering great family fun. Don’t want to drive? You can also view this beautiful spot from above with a flight tour from Moyer Aviation. A 30-minute round trip experience high above the colorful landscape will be an experience you won’t soon forget.

Tips for Visiting the Poconos in the Fall

  • Timing: Check out the fall foliage reports on the Pocono Mountains visitor’s website to make sure your visit is timed for peak fall foliage. Pocono fall foliage runs from late September to mid-October but is dependent on weather conditions.
  • Weather: Layers are recommended as autumn days can start or end chilly but warm up beautifully!
  • Mode of Transportation: How do you want to see the scenery by slingshot, train, bike, car or plane? Pick a mode of transportation and get moving!
  • Reservations: This is a popular time of year for the Poconos so book early and ask our concierge for any assistance or tips in planning your trip.
